Art, Music, and Climate Science: Murmur Charity’s Focus

There has been a growing number of initiatives that are bringing the music and climate-science worlds together, which is both exciting and encouraging. One of the latest initiatives is Murmur, a new UK-based charity that will focus on the art and music sectors. Murmur is launching with £1m of pledges from companies, including founding partners Beggars Group, Secretly Affiliates, Ninja Tune, Because Music, and !K7. European indies body Impala is also on board as a supporter.

Other music and arts companies can also join Murmur by committing to a carbon audit and reduction of their carbon emissions in line with a 1.5C future. Additionally, they are required to make annual contributions to Murmur’s fund. The fund will be used to provide grants to projects tackling the climate emergency within the visual arts and music industries, inspiring new ways of storytelling and positive action around climate change, and to bigger global projects.

UK music bodies BPI and AIM have already received a grant to support their work on the Music Climate Pact – an initiative originally launched in late 2021. This collaboration between the music and climate-science worlds is essential in addressing climate change and fostering sustainability within the arts and music sectors.
