Promoting Data Science Opportunities for Women in Blacksburg

A half-day conference with speakers from the field is being organized by Virginia Tech to raise awareness about the work and increase diversity in data science on Tuesday. The university’s efforts to promote the participation of women in data science align with its mission to support women in pursuing careers in the field.

On Monday, a networking mixer for anyone interested in data science was held, with the aim of providing opportunities for women to network with professionals in the field and hear from women who have advanced their careers in data science. Angie Patterson, a Professor of Practice in the department of statistics at Virginia Tech, emphasized the importance of providing young women with role models in the field and discussed the theme of the event, which focused on how to gain visibility as a woman in data science.

According to the US Census Bureau, the demand for data scientists is expected to increase by 35 percent by 2032. This presents an opportunity for women to pursue careers in this exciting and high-paying field. Virginia Tech is committed to increasing participation and encouraging women to pursue careers in data science through events like these and its ongoing efforts to support women’s professional development.
