Exploring the Functionality of Apple Vision Pro’s Infrared Eye-Tracking Technology

The Apple Vision Pro is a groundbreaking piece of technology that has amazed many with its technical achievements. While some may hesitate to spend $3,500 on the headset, it is widely acknowledged that Apple has created something truly impressive. One standout feature of the Vision Pro is its advanced eye-tracking system. This system utilizes sophisticated infrared cameras inside the eyepieces to project invisible light patterns onto the user’s eyes. The cameras then track the user’s eye movements rapidly and accurately, allowing them to control the operating system and user interface through gaze and hand gestures.

Taking a closer look at the Vision Pro’s infrared cameras and lights, The Slow Mo Guys used a high-speed camera without the typical infrared-blocking filter to investigate. The headset features infrared illuminators on the front, providing crucial data about the user’s environment. Inside the headset, there are at least eight infrared illuminators per eye, totaling around 16 or more. Combined with the three on the front, the Vision Pro boasts nearly 20 infrared lights to enhance its functionality.

Apple maintains its reputation for secrecy, but has disclosed that the Vision Pro includes two high-resolution main cameras, six world-facing tracking cameras, and four internal eye-tracking cameras. These internal cameras work in conjunction with the IR illuminators to accurately track the user’s eyes. Apple’s expertise in infrared technology is evident through its use of infrared sensors in devices like FaceID and LiDAR technology. Overall, the Vision Pro’s advanced features and technology make it a standout product in the realm of virtual reality headsets.
