Indiana teachers can access free training on the science of reading and earn a literacy endorsement.

Indiana teachers now have the opportunity to earn a literacy endorsement through a professional development course offered by the Indiana Department of Education. This course is free for educators, and upon completion, they can receive up to a $1,200 stipend for their time. The course will be available to eligible teachers until June 2025 and aligns with Indiana’s academic standards that emphasize the science of reading, focusing on the use of phonics in reading instruction.

A law passed in Indiana in 2023 requires schools to use curriculums aligned with the science of reading by the next school year. The state’s literacy endorsement was also signed into law, mandating that all educators teaching in literacy-related fields and licensed after June 30, 2025, must have the endorsement. The 80-hour professional development course is funded by the state and allows educators to add the literacy endorsement to their license by next year upon completion.

This new opportunity provides teachers with the necessary tools and training to enhance their literacy instruction skills and meet the state’s academic standards. The ongoing support and resources available through this professional development course will benefit educators and ultimately help improve literacy outcomes for students in Indiana schools.
