Journalist Gustavo Gorriti targeted by Peruvian authorities: “False information is effective”

Gustavo Gorriti, born in Lima in 1948, was a six-time national judo champion in Peru before switching to Krav Maga, the self-defense system of the Israeli armed forces, due to injuries. As the director of the investigative newspaper IDL-Reporters, he and his journalists practice Krav Maga three times a week as a necessary work obligation, recognizing the complementarity of martial arts and journalism. Gorriti recently faced a serious health challenge when he was diagnosed with mantle lymphoma, an aggressive cancer, but he continues to fight against the persecution of the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office.

In his late 30s, Gorriti began his career in journalism and became a legendary reporter over the years, known for his investigative work on corruption scandals in Peru and Latin America. The attempts by the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office to uncover Gorriti’s sources of information have sparked international solidarity from the journalism community and organizations advocating for freedom of expression. Despite facing legal challenges, Gorriti remains committed to upholding the integrity of his work and protecting his sources.

Facing a powerful enemy in the form of disinformation campaigns and legal proceedings, Gorriti refuses to back down. His dedication to investigative journalism is evident in his past work on corruption scandals involving top politicians and businessmen in Peru. As he continues to resist attempts to compromise his work, Gorriti remains focused on upholding journalistic principles and fighting against those who seek to discredit or silence him.
