Manhertz Resigns from Position as Athletic Director at St. Bonaventure

St. Bonaventure’s athletic director Joe Manhertz has resigned suddenly, as the university announced on Saturday. This comes amid concerns regarding the men’s basketball program’s decision to opt out of the NIT without informing players and fans beforehand. The university did not provide specific reasons for Manhertz’s departure, other than saying that school president Jeff Gingerich accepted his resignation letter on Friday night.

In a statement, Gingerich thanked Manhertz for his contributions to the athletics department during his three years at St. Bonaventure. He mentioned that Manhertz had made excellent coaching hires and had played a key role in the Bolder Bonaventure fundraising campaign. The school has already removed most references to Manhertz from its website.

Manhertz took over as athletic director at St. Bonaventure in August 2021, following his time as an associate athletic director at Duke. His hiring by St. Bonaventure was a return to his roots, as he hails from the Rochester, New York, area. Questions arose around Manhertz after the men’s basketball team chose to decline an NIT bid following their loss in the A10 tournament semifinals.

After it was reported by ESPN that St. Bonaventure had declined the NIT bid, Manhertz released a statement explaining the decision. He cited travel challenges, injuries, and the potential for players to enter the transfer portal as reasons for not pursuing postseason play. Manhertz stated that the decision was made by the athletic department administration and coaching staff in the best interest of the student athletes.
