Northern Illinois University has been awarded a $158,531 Susan Harwood Federal Safety Health Training Grant. The grant will promote education, workplace safety, and health training, with a focus on mental health and suicide prevention. These training opportunities will be available to small businesses, as well as construction and general industry workers who are at risk and harder to reach.

Through this grant, Northern Illinois University’s continuing and professional education unit and the National Safety Education Center will provide courses that cover topics such as recognition, avoidance, and prevention of mental health stressors. The courses will be led by John Newquist, an OSHA-authorized outreach trainer. Training sessions will be available in various formats, including face-to-face, virtual, and on-site delivery, with sessions ranging from two to four hours in length.

The university’s Continuing and Professional Education offers non-credit professional development and certification-preparation courses, as well as partnering with OSHA to provide training courses.
