Gunman opens fire in Houston church during live mass broadcast

A possible shooting occurred at Lakewood Church in Houston during a live service led by famous pastor Joel Osteen. The church, which has an average attendance of 45,000 people, was in the middle of a Spanish-language mass when chaos broke out. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, police responded to an active shooting at the church near the Southwest Freeway shortly after 2 p.m. local time.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said authorities shot a possible suspect, but there is currently no information on the condition of that suspect or any other possible suspects. It is unclear if anyone else has been detained. Photos and videos show police cars and ambulances in front of the church, reports ABC13.

On social media, it was reported that there was an active shooting going on at Lakewood Church. “There is an active situation involving shots fired at Lakewood. Law enforcement is on the scene. That is all the information we have at this time,” read an announcement from the church on Twitter, which was later reposted on Instagram under a different handle ‘X’.

Witnesses said they heard a burst of gunfire, perhaps dozens of shots during this incident. Around the same time, multiple law enforcement and other authorities are on the scene at Lakewood Church responding to a potential active shooter
