At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, researchers Saif Al Hamad and Omar Shaker are using advanced technology such as wind tunnels and 3D printers to design more efficient wind turbines. By testing various shapes and designs, they hope to create turbines that can harness wind energy more effectively.

Using data from a horizontal axis wind turbine inside the wind tunnel, Al Hamad analyzes the results to determine the best design for maximum efficiency. By starting with smaller scale models, they ensure that the software used to analyze the data is reliable before scaling up to larger residential-sized turbines. Shaker highlights the importance of maximizing power output from smaller turbines, making them more usable even in areas with restrictions like noise levels.

The research on wind energy is crucial not only for reducing energy costs but also to move away from harmful emissions from traditional energy sources like gas, coal, and oil.
