Seniors in DeSoto County benefit from technology classes and equipment

In Arcadia, Florida, DeSoto County seniors are benefiting from a program that helps them improve their communication skills through technology. The program, offered at Senior Friendship Centers, is funded by Comcast and the Church of the Redeemer from Sarasota.

The seniors participating in the program are enthusiastic about learning new tech skills. They are being taught how to use platforms like Zoom and Gmail, as well as how to organize and store information in the cloud. This knowledge is proving to be helpful in various aspects of their lives, from keeping in touch with family to managing important documents.

The grant money provided by Comcast and the Church of the Redeemer has allowed Senior Friendship Centers to offer hands-on classes to seniors in DeSoto County. The classes cover a range of topics, including computer use, website navigation, and online services such as medication ordering and SNAP programs.

Participants in the program are gaining confidence in their ability to use technology. Previously, many seniors felt overwhelmed and unsure when it came to using computers. Now, they are expanding their knowledge and becoming more self-sufficient.

The impact of the program is evident in the stories shared by seniors like Sadie Thornton and others who have overcome their fear of technology. As more seniors benefit from these workshops and resources, Senior Friendship Centers hope to reach even more individuals who can benefit from improving their tech skills.
