Smart Shopping Carts of the Future: The Headless Checkout Revolution and How it’s Shaping Retail

Cutting Edge Technology for Tomorrow’s Grocery Stores | Progressive Grocer

The NRF 2024 Innovation Lab was a hub for creative tech solutions that showcased the future of retail. One such solution was smart shopping carts, which were highlighted at the event. One of the innovations involved a “headless checkout” concept, described by Wink CEO Deepak Jain. This allows checkout to occur anywhere with no credit card needed, making it device agnostic and already in use in Asia with plans to expand to North America.

Jain also mentioned potential uses for grocers, including preventing minors from purchasing age-restricted products and enabling shoppers to pick up ordered products from smart lockers. He noted that one grocer had expressed interest in adopting the solution for the latter purchase.

Bold Commerce co-founder Jay Myers pointed out that the platform could also address the issue of cart abandonment by speeding up the transaction process since no credit card is required to complete an order. In response to questions about potential ways to “game the system,” Jain explained that the platform could distinguish between similar-looking people and living people versus dummies or photographs. If there is any doubt about a person’s identity, the solution will step up authentication by asking for their voice.

The Innovation Lab provided a fascinating glimpse into tomorrow’s tech and how it will shape retail in the future.
