Tragic Loss: World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum and Coach Gervais Hakizimana Die in Car Crash


Kenya road accident claims the life of world record marathon holder Kelvin Kiptum

On Sunday, the running community was left in shock as world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana tragically lost their lives in a car crash in western Kenya. The accident occurred at around 11pm (2000 GMT) and the car, which was heading to Eldoret, had three occupants. Sadly, Kiptum and his coach died at the scene, while the other passenger was taken to hospital for treatment.

Peter Mulinge, the police commander for Elgeyo Marakwet County in western Kenya, confirmed the details of the accident. Kiptum had recently achieved a world record 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon, surpassing Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge’s previous record by 34 seconds. His impressive performance had brought joy to many and inspired others to strive for greatness.

The loss of Kiptum and his coach has left a void in the running community as they mourn their passing. Their contributions to the sport will be remembered and honored as they leave behind a legacy that will inspire future generations of runners.
