Volleyball World Leads IF Social Media League Rankings for 2024

Volleyball World (FIVB) has once again emerged as the leader of Redtorch’s SportOnSocial league table for 2024, which evaluates the social media performance of all 42 summer and winter Olympic International Federations (IFs) over the past year. In the rankings, Volleyball World beat out World Athletics for the top spot, with the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) coming in third, followed by World Rugby and World Aquatics in the top five. The International Cricket Council (ICC) made the highest new entry on the table in 11th place, while the International Handball Federation (IHF) saw the biggest climb, moving up seven spots to 23rd. On the other hand, World Triathlon experienced the biggest fall in the standings, slipping down 11 places to 37th.

To compile the rankings, Redtorch analyzed 322,600 social media posts across 347 primary, discipline-specific, and World Championship pages run by IFs. Volleyball World, which also topped the table last year, ranked first for engagement on both Facebook and YouTube, with the most views of any IF on the latter platform. In 2023, IFs saw significant growth in followers on Instagram, adding a combined total of 18.9 million followers. Instagram also accounted for 71 percent of all engagements. Additionally, TikTok is rapidly becoming a more popular platform, with the average number of IF followers increasing by 253 percent on the short-form video medium.

Throughout the year, there was an increase in vertical video content, with 118 percent more posts on platforms such as Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts, and TikTok. Looking ahead to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Federations have a great opportunity to continue growing their audiences through social media.
