Workers demand compensation for travel to work

In a recent survey, 8 out of 10 workers expressed that a free commute would be a significant factor in their decision to return to the office. Workers cited longer commutes as a disruptor to their work-life balance, highlighting the importance of this benefit. The average cost of commuting has seen a drastic increase since the onset of the pandemic, making it a key consideration for many employees.

Employers looking to entice workers back to the office may want to consider offering to cover their commuting costs. Ping pong tables, free snacks, and trendy decor are less likely to sway employees compared to practical benefits like this. According to a survey conducted by Ringover, the majority of workers indicated they would be more willing to return to the office if their employer paid for their commute.

Workers reported spending an average of $8,466 annually on commuting expenses, which includes costs such as gas, car maintenance, lost income due to commuting, and car insurance. This represents a significant increase from previous years. Even though commute times in some cities have decreased since the pandemic, many employees still spend an average of 27 minutes each way traveling to work, which can add up to an hour daily.

However, there are exceptions to this trend. Some workers, known as “super commuters,” are willing to spend large sums on their commute if it means saving costs elsewhere. These individuals may live in smaller, more affordable cities while working in expensive metropolitan areas. The savings they garner from lower rent costs outweigh the expenses and inconveniences associated with their commute.
